"It was so frickin' close and big. We somehow couldn't see the damned thing. The forest undergrowth is thick enough to hide giants out here."
I received the following account:
"We heard one yell/roar at us once at Huckleberry Creek near Mt. Rainier, Washington in 1991. It was like a lion roar mixed with a bear roar but yet coming from a man but a huge barrel-chested man whose shout could be felt through the ground up into your core. It was so frickin' close and big. We somehow couldn't see the damned thing. The forest undergrowth is thick enough to hide giants out here. Timber Giants!
All I had was my Ruger 10/22 which we both knew was useless. Something possessed me to yell out, "In the name of Jesus Christ leave us alone and go away." There was no reply or roar/yell, but I didn't wait for one anyway. I turned and saw my wife had decided to run back toward the truck as I was yelling at it. So I bolted right away and caught up to her as she reached the truck only 50 feet away. We were camped near the creek about a mile away so we sped back.
We were just out trying to get some privacy from the kids (teens) in camp when this happened. I managed to calm my wife down and the kids just laughed and said it was probably just a bear. So we were outvoted and stayed another night. It was uneventful.
My wife was extremely grateful that I used Jesus' name to protect us. We were agnostic but that day we both found Jesus when we were actually just looking for a place to spend some alone time together in the woods. We recently returned to that spot to camp again last summer but unfortunately, too many years had gone by and the forest had reclaimed the campsite. The encounter spot was the same. We still felt dread there and immediately left." J
