The Alaska Triangle encompasses Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvik. Since 1972, it has been linked to over 20,000 disappearances, making it a significant point of concern.
According to Alaska's Department of Public Safety, the Bering jet was traveling from Unalakleet on Thursday afternoon with nine passengers and a pilot.
Bering Air services 32 communities in western Alaska from hubs in Nome, Kotzebue, and Unalakleet. Most Alaska communities are not connected to the state’s main road system and rely heavily on alternate means of travel, including small airplanes.
The plane’s disappearance marks the third major U.S. aviation mishap in eight days. A commercial jetliner and an Army helicopter collided, killing 67 people, and a medical transportation plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing the six people on board and another person on the ground.
Thursday's tragedy marks just one in a long history of chilling crashes over a region known as the 'Alaska Triangle'.The triangle is a large, remote area between Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvi. It has been regarded as the air version of the Bermuda Triangle, according to a report in The Express. An area of Alaska near which a Bering jet has vanished with ten people on board has a chilling history of disappearances.
Here are key things you need to know about 'Alaska Triangle':
The Alaska Triangle encompasses Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvik. Since 1972, it has been linked to over 20,000 disappearances, making it a significant point of concern.
-In 1972 House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Congressman Nick Begich disappeared while flying from Anchorage to Juneau as the plane seemingly vanished into the air. The 1972 incident is eerily similar to the ongoing search for the missing Bering flight that vanished while traveling to Nome from Unalakleet this week.
-Another notable case involved 25-year-old Gary Frank Sotherden from New York, who went missing during a 1970s hunting trip in the Alaskan wilderness. In 1997, a human skull was discovered along the Porcupine River, and DNA analysis in 2022 identified it as Sotherden’s.
-More recently, Joseph Balderas also vanished without a trace in 2016, with Florence Okpealuk, 33, going missing in August 2020. Like others, they two disappeared without a trace - stumping local law enforcement and worrying fellow residents.
-On average, about 2,250 people go missing in the Alaska Triangle each year, twice the national average. Theories about these disappearances include unusual magnetic activity and extraterrestrial involvement.
-Similar to the Bermuda Triangle, the Alaska Triangle remains a subject of fascination and speculation. Despite various theories, the region's vast wilderness and treacherous environment likely contribute to its high disappearance rate.
