'CHICAGO MOTHMAN' & 'CONEWAGO PHANTOM': Are They the Same Species of WINGED HUMANOID?

Previous to the Chicago Mothman sightings and reports, I experienced an encounter with a similar red-eyed winged humanoid in South Central Pennsylvania in October 1988.

I have written and talked about the incident - The Conewago Phantom Screams & 'OLE RED EYE': My 'CONEWAGO PHANTOM' Encounter.

When I started the Phantoms & Monsters blog, I eventually posted my encounter. Not long after the post I began to receive local reports from witnesses along the Conewago Creek, from Camp Conewago downstream to where it empties into the Susquehanna River.

Below are 3 of those reports that I received:

The Next Sighting of the Conewago Phantom

I just received an email in May 2011 about another winged humanoid sighting in northeast Adams County, PA:

“Sir - on Sunday, May 8th at dusk I was traveling east on Hunterstown Rd. Rt. 394 towards Hampton, PA. Just before I started to cross Conewago Creek I plainly saw a large creature with wings fly over the bridge in front of me. It was about 100 ft. in front of the car. The creature was dark in color and was as big as a full-grown adult human. I looked in the direction in which it flew but I lost sight of it. I asked a neighbor (I live in Hampton) if she had ever heard of anything like this. She said there was a rumor of a sighting near the Boy Scout camp a few years ago. I searched the internet and found your story including the second sighting near Dick's Dam. Have you determined what this thing is? Is there a chance that it could hurt anyone?” E.

Was it the ‘Conewago Phantom?'

I received another inquiry on June 1, 2012:

“I saw a flying 'something' during the evening of April 29th around 7:50 pm as I was driving north on Harmony Grove, Rd near the Conewago Creek crossing. I noticed something fly straight up into the air from behind the trees on the creek bank. It shot straight up just at the tree tops, spread its wings, and flew east towards Pinchot State Park. It was not a bird - just too big. I don't know what it was but I'd say it was about 10 feet high and had wings like a bat. I didn't notice a head or tail. It was black in color. No feathers.

I searched Google and your story came up. I didn't know about the Conewago Phantom sightings. I don't know if it was that thing. I did find something like a large bird seen north of York back in 2006. I found some photos on Google Maps of where this thing was seen by me. Any idea what it was? Thanks” - J.S., Dover, Pa

NOTE: The witness had scant information to add to the original email other than he was sure that this was not a bird. He mentioned that it was a bit overcast but he thought he got a better contrast of the creature because of that. I'm starting to wonder if the increased numbers of large bird-like creature sightings reported throughout Pennsylvania are connected somehow.

Are ‘Mothman’ and the ‘Conewago Phantom’ Parallel Beings?

On June 28, 2012, I received an email from another witness about a possible sighting of the 'Conewago Phantom' approximately 1 mile downstream from the most recent report from April 29th. He also mentions another possible sighting nearby on Rt. 74 just north of Dover, PA.:

“Sir, my girlfriend was driving over to spend the night at my home after she had gotten off work (2nd shift) and had seen a "very large bird" the size of a car fly in front of her as she was driving south on route 74 crossing the Conewago Creek bridge in York County, PA at around 1:30 am about 3 weeks ago.

Odd that we had also seen a very broad-shouldered tall man walking east in the bright moonlight (remember that bright moonlight night a month or two ago?) through a farmer’s field adjacent to the Lighthouse Baptist Church at 12:30 am just several weeks prior.” M.M.

NOTE: All of the sightings were adjacent to Conewago Creek. All the witnesses were forthcoming to me though, each was reluctant to have their name mentioned in the report. I grew up in the general area and know intimately that these witnesses would likely face harsh ridicule.

The sightings and descriptions of the winged humanoids in the Chicagoland/Southern Wisconsin region are very similar to the winged humanoid I encountered in 1988.

There have also been notable sightings of winged humanoids in South Central Pennsylvania, including reports from near Littlestown, North Lancaster, and Codorus Furnace.
