A hiker in south central Maine encounters blood along a trail. He then comes across a deer that is barely alive and horrendously injured. The next day, he makes a disturbing discovery.
I received the following account:
"About 7 years ago I had a disturbing experience that still bothers me. I was bushwhacking in South Central Maine when this happened. After about 3 hours of constant uphill hiking, I took a break. I pulled out some snacks and a book, settled down on a nice rock, and saw a really pretty stream with a short waterfall. I wandered in that direction, picking blueberries like it was nobody's business.
I came to the stream, washed some of the sweat off, and noticed some small drops of blood on the stones by the bank. They were very shiny still, so they must have been pretty fresh. I also saw that there was a clear trail of drops and a pretty easily defined trail. I grabbed my pack and followed it, noticing that the drops were getting larger and there were more of them in some areas.
Eventually, I found a spot where all the ferns had been matted down and there was a lot of blood. I decided to quickly get out of there and tell the authorities when I saw them.
After another few hours of hiking, I was setting up my hammock when I heard a lot of rustling. I turned around and saw a deer with a massive slash mark down its side. It was very weak and could barely stumble along. It got spooked when I turned around, bolted, and then collapsed about 600 yards down the hill. I thought nothing of it, probably just a bobcat or something.
The next morning I found the deer, but all of its organs had been neatly arranged next to the body, with a super clean and almost surgical cut down its side. Where the huge scratch mark was. To this day I am not sure if it was just a hunter with some crazy good cleaning skills or something else. Even more disturbing is that nothing touched the surrounding organs, no animal tracks or evidence of nibbling.
I don't want to know why or how, but I am still very confused and worried about why nothing was eating the deer, especially after it had been there for several hours." T
