The submitter's grandmother and her family, while living in New Mexico, had a terrifying encounter with a robotic being while on a family picnic in 1957.
I received the following account:
"This is my grandmother's story that I’ve heard many times since I was little. I’ve heard it from her, my great aunt, and my great uncle, and there are friends of theirs who were there and experienced this and are still alive as well.
My grandmother grew up in San Mateo, New Mexico. At the time of this encounter, she said she believed she was in 2nd grade and that this happened in late 1957. The oldest in the group that was there that day was 14 and she said the youngest in the group was her youngest sister, who was just a toddler.
They went up to the caves in the hills to have a picnic. They were all laughing, playing, and having a good time and she said all of a sudden everything got eerily quiet. Somebody said, “Look” and they all looked up and what they saw was absolutely huge and terrifying. She said that it was a huge robotic-looking thing made out of some sort of silver material and was taller than the trees in the area (pine trees) and she said it was walking away from where they were at.
My grandma said that they all got scared and started to scream and it started walking towards them. I guess once they saw it coming towards them, they all scattered down the hills and back to their homes screaming and crying because they had no clue what it was that they saw.
They’ve always just referred to this “thing” as the Tin Man and my grandma said it’s comparable to the robot Gort from the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. She’s always said that “it wasn’t human. It was foreign.” D
