The writer's great-aunt told her about a bizarre encounter that she had while driving on I-10 late at night. A driverless black car, among three others, pulls up beside her. More strangeness ensues.
I received the following account:
"Hi. I lived in Tempe, Arizona for about nine months back in 2012. I then moved to Tucson for several months after that and lived with my great aunt who is now in her 70s. She’s a very rational, logical person and while she’s not opposed to the existence of otherworldly things, that’s not usually where her mind gravitates towards when explaining things. I’ve asked her to tell me this story a couple of times over the years, I’ve since moved away and don’t speak to her as much but I’ll try to recount it as best I can remember.
I think this occurred about 15 years ago but I can’t quite remember the year. She said she had attended a concert near Scottsdale with a friend who lived there and was driving back to Tucson so it was fairly late. She was on I-10 and was the only vehicle on the highway, the stretch of road she was on was about halfway to Tucson. Even now that drive has stretches of desolate area and I can only imagine how much more there was those years ago.
Suddenly in the lane next to her, there were three black cars, no license plates on any of them, they came from behind her seemingly out of nowhere. The lights were on inside of one of the cars, and when she looked in there was no one driving, but there was a man in one of the back passenger seats who seemed to be writing in a notebook. She only caught a glimpse as the three cars then sped up, and got in front of her, and she swears she saw them drive up a ramp and into the back of an 18-wheeler that had appeared on the highway up ahead. This is also remarkably strange given how, well, flat, it is out there. It’s not like you’re driving around bends and coming up or down inclines. It’s flat, you can see for miles and miles. She still doesn’t know where that big truck came from or how she didn’t see it in front of her.
She recalled that the 18-wheeler then steered off the right side of the highway, off into the desert, and about a minute later the lights from the truck went out and she could no longer see it. I’m sure I’m forgetting certain details of the story, I wish I remembered more clearly or wrote down what she told me. Either way, I’ve always found this such a fascinating little tale, and the way my little old auntie tells it is so amusing, that she speaks of it most nonchalantly.
I asked her what she thought and she said likely the government or some corporation testing self-driving cars, which certainly seems plausible. At no point in time did she feel threatened or in danger, it was just an odd midnight drive in the desert." W
