“Say Merry Christmas, everyone!” So begins a strange video taken on December 25, 2014, in Northern Minnesota. What begins as a simple family gathering around the Christmas tree turns into an alleged sighting of a Bigfoot.
The family quickly scurries outside, smartphones in hand, to film the large biped as it moves through the bare trees in the distance. The dog runs out towards the strange figure, barking wildly at whatever it might be. The dog continues to bark and growl, standing alert, nose pointed straight ahead. As the family slowly backs up toward the house, the camera turns to an open clearing. And just at that moment, the dark shadow can be seen, walking through the trees with a strange, lumbering gait. With that, the family retreats back into the house, “slightly frightened.”
While the true nature of this video is uncertain, reactions seem to be mixed in the comments. Some feel it’s legitimate, others think it’s a laughable hoax, pointing out the relatively unenthusiastic response of the family to what should be an extraordinary encounter. Even so, what has many perplexed is the reaction of the dog. While the dog initially approached the unidentified figure, it then backed off and continued to bark in its direction.
The Minnesota Bigfoot video was featured on Paranormal Caught on Camera in an episode that aired on March 31, 2022. In it, the announcer indicates that it's the Byrd Family. The various hosts of the show found the footage highly believable and were taken by the seemingly frightened reaction of the dog. The footage can be found at (youtube.com/watch?v=NeIq3Og0XRo).
In the comments section, some people had some intriguing thoughts about the video. Ritan Martinez wrote: “Listen with headphones - the creature made growling sounds at Riff the dog, just before Riff abruptly backs off. You can hear more warnings from it after that, they sound very subtle and directed at the dog. At the end, you can hear the heavy crunch of its stride as it takes off to the left. Very interesting video, was it ever followed up?”
Brian Krames thought its speed was shocking: “What sealed the deal was how fast this creature moved from right to left at a very fast clip, without stumbling or falling down, through snow and heavy brush in the last 30 seconds. I would love to see a person in a 50-pound 'suit' move that fast without 'face-planting' on a log or a rock out there. N chance of a person doing this, but it was not very large so it could have been a juvenile Sasquatch and their dog was persistent enough for it to move away swiftly. The speed of these creatures in some of these videos will tell you if it is fake or legit; they all have this trait in common with very good dexterity and excellent mobility for a creature of its size. I've seen footage of people in 'suits' try to move that quickly through uneven terrain, over rocks, tree branches (and snow, in this case) and it is quite hilarious.”
