The Flying Klansman

The following account is one of the more bizarre that I have ever received. Even though I hold utter contempt for those people and groups who exhibit hate, I decided to go ahead and post:

Hello - I had a experience that has baffled me for many years. I don't know how to explain what I saw. At the time it was so terrifying, I still get chills thinking about it. My daughter suggested I write you.

When I was a younger man, I lived in Drew County, Arkansas. This was in the late 1950s or so. Back then, we just kept to ourselves, even in high school. I had a few buddies and we'd spend a lot of time outside and working on our cars.

On one Saturday evening in Summer 1959, we were kind of bored and sitting at my place talking. About 9PM we piled in my '55 Chevy and drove towards Monticello figuring we find something to do there. There were four of us guys. As we drove towards the lake we saw a lot of light coming from the clearing on the other side of the lake. So we decided to go see what was going on.

As we approached up the gravel road, we were starting to realize what was going on. It was obvious that there was a Klan rally in progress, and that we weren't invited. I backed up and started to turn back onto the road, when the two guys in the back said to pull over by the woods and park the car. I argued with them, but they were insistent and wanted to get a better look at what was going on.

I drove a bit into the woods and parked. I had a bad feeling about this, but I also wanted to see what was happening. I had heard rumors all my life about the Klan and knew a few people who I thought were members. My parents didn't want anything to do with it, as far as I knew.

We walked carefully through woods until was could get a clear view of the proceedings. There must have been 50 or more people in hoods and robes with torches. They were yelling and walking around in a big circle. After doing this awhile they lit the huge cross. We were far enough away that we couldn't make out what they were saying.

Then we noticed a guy dressed in a blue satin hood and robe walk towards the middle near the cross. Everybody dropped their torches, drop to their knees and got quiet. Then all of a sudden this guy lifts up into the air and starts flying around the cross, screaming like a banshee! If I hadn't seen it I would have never believed it! We were so shocked we ran into each other trying to get away. One of the guys was so scared, he started crying. We got back into the car and got out of there. We didn't say a word to each other on the way back to my house, and everyone scattered when we got there. I only ever discussed it with my closest friend, but it was a painful subject after all these years. We're two old men in our 70s and it still makes us emotional.

My daughter said that she believes that they were Satanists, but I don't think that's what it was. Actually, I have no idea what it was, even after all these years. Do you have any thoughts. Thanks...Del

NOTE: I contacted Del and we discussed what had happened. This is a first for me...I have never received any account related to the Klu Klux Klan. Maybe someone who is familiar with the rituals can explain it to me...but I have never heard of anybody 'flying' at a cross burning. Del seemed very sincere...in fact he said one of the other witnesses would talk to me if needed. I may take him up on that, because at this point I have no idea about what they saw. Lon
