Strange Encounters in the Heartland

In July 2009, I received the following anecdote from a reader. At the time, he was asking that witnesses of this phenomena to come forward. I received a few inquiries but there were no other witnesses to the event:

I'm not sure if this is something you'd even be interested in, and the only other person there (former roommate in college) is dead.

I had just purchased my first motorcycle in Holdrege, Nebraska...just a little 360 Honda. My roommate had a larger bike that we went to Holdrege on. I'll explain the circumstances, because it won't make sense without it since it was dark.

My roommate knew the dealer and had him looking for a cheap bike for me. He found one, and I was excited. He asked when I could get there, and my roommate said "We'll go after I get off work at 5!" So that's what we did.

Since it was early April (1985 if my memory serves...slight chance it was 1986), we took warm clothes. Long story short, I bought it, and we headed back to Hays, Kansas. I think it was about 9 or 9:30 PM when we left the dealership. Leaving out the details, we come to a spot where the highway meets another highway, and is dirt if we went straight. My roommate explained that if we go straight, we'll get to his parents' house sooner (spending the night there), and I was freezing, but had little experience on a bike, and didn't wanna wreck on the gravel. So we went east, I think it was, toward Republican City, Nebraska. We go a few miles on a hilly highway, and pop over a large hill, and several miles in front of us was this burning ring of fire (I assume a ring...it was slowly going down on the horizon, and we could only see a little over half of it). We heard NOTHING, and this thing was HUGE! It looked larger than a sunrise in the morning, with obvious flames around the outside, but completely black inside of that. I know about atmospheric aberration and that type of thing, so I won't restate how big it was.

Like in a grade B horror flick, and without even looking at each other, we eventually slowed to a stop at the exact same time after a couple more hills. We just sat there for a few seconds, in the bottom between two other hills, and said nothing. I finally asked him, "Did you see that?"

He replied rather unsure, "See what? We're going the other way!" And we did. I don't know if he was checking his mirrors, but I didn't much. Too worried about wrecking.

I assumed due to the magnitude of the thing, there would be all kinds of news stories about it...but nothing. Not even a whisper about anything bizarre. I wish I hadn't listened to Mark, and I'd gone to see what it was, IF that were possible. I have contacted several sites to see if anyone else saw something...but I'll never forget what I saw.

Now, not trying to sound like a crackpot...I also witnessed three UFO's in southern Kansas on the 5th of July (2008) at about 2 AM. And no, they weren't fireworks. Fireworks don't go from the northern horizon to the southern horizon...especially with no noise, and with about a hundred yard streak behind them. All three (diamond shapes, golden in color) followed the exact same arc, and were at the exact same speed, like a formation. I may have a few drinks, but I don't do any drugs or mushrooms or anything like that. Just happened to be walking my dog to prepare him for bed in the house. Tried to get a pic, but #1, wasn't fast enough, and #2, the town I was in has HORRIBLE cell phone service. It's in a valley, and my cell rarely works there, but it was my second thought. First thought was "WOW!"

Hope I didn't bore you to tears with something you didn't want to read, and I really hope you don't have a filter that keeps you from getting this. I love reading about these kind of things, and if I had loads of money, I'd do physical investigating.

Thanks for your time. If you have anything, I'd appreciate hearing about it. If you want any more info, I'll give you what I can. If not, I'll just keep reading your site. It is great. jkh

The next narrative was received around the same time as the previous anecdote:

On June 25, 2009, we were driving from Colorado to the St Louis, Missouri area at 11 25 PM. We were heading East on I-70 in Kansas. We were driving a 4 door Infiniti sedan G20, so we could see all of the way around our vehicle without obstruction.

We just passed mile marker 25. It was a very clear dark night - not a cloud in the sky, we could see for miles. There were off in the distance, several antenna type (red lights) flashing sequentially, continuously in unison. We commented on the red lights and was wondering why so many antenna were in the area.

While traveling approximately 70 mph heading East bound, we witnessed a flash of light to our right near the outside of our car. It seemed to be just above the height of the car, off in the distance about 20 feet out from the car behind the passenger head / shoulder area.

Then another flash light a huge very bright quick LED about a foot back farther from the first. Then a third flash closer in time, but further in distance toward the rear of the car. (As if it were a old fashioned photo flash bulb), only very bright and much Larger.

We both looked at each other. I slowed the car. I said:

"Did you see that?"

She said: "I saw the bright light flash 3 times, but not at the same time as if it was in a delayed pattern."

I agreed. We decided to pull over on the side of the shoulder to see if we could see anything more.

I looked behind us and there was not a car in sight for miles, but I could see an overpass ahead. We pulled over to the shoulder on the right side of the road just past the overpass. We stopped the car and pulled to the side of the road but there was nothing.

We took off back onto the interstate. We were going about 50 miles hour increasing our speed when another bright flash occurred. Closer this time, almost touching the car hood, in front middle.

The light floated to the passenger side of the vehicle almost as if it was hugging or surrounding the car. Again, it was off the ground above the car approximately at the height of the rear view mirror.

The second blink or short surge of light was directly even with the car at the passenger window. The third flash again in a later 2 second delay pattern from the first.

It was if something was flying like a very large Lightening Bug, only with a very bright LED light flash about the size of a volleyball. After each flash, it appeared to have a diamond-shaped light or a cross formation as it dimmed out.

We kept driving in disbelief as to what we just saw. We never did see an object. Just very bright Orb-like LED lights in 3 sequential flashes, but with a delay between the 2nd 3rd flash, 2 separate times.

Driving at that speed we were just dumbfounded as to what it could be. Especially after the second incident, as it was in front of the car and we were traveling over 50 miles an hour, but it seemed to mock our speed and hang in the air right with us. We never heard any odd sounds.

The next account details another odd encounter in the Kansas countryside:

One evening in the Spring of 1975, my girlfriend and I were driving through the Kansas countryside. After crossing a cement bridge that spanned a river, we pulled into a farmer's access road and parked at the edge of a field alongside a bend in the river with the car pointing east. Not long after we stopped we noticed a strange light that suddenly approached our location in a quick "blur". Suddenly, hovering above the tress was a dark object, rectangular in shape with on red & one green running light positioned together on the lower part of the craft at its center. We stared in amazement and couldn't take our eyes off the object.

After 5 minutes or so, we noticed the craft's position had moved to the right. It seemed to move in a very slow motion to the other side of the river. After another 5 minutes I decided to drive away from the area. As we turned onto the county road and subsequently onto the cement bridge we saw that the craft had returned to its original position, above us and slightly back from the bridge. I stopped again and got out to look at the craft.

The object was about 20-25 ft. wide and now I noticed a large rectangular glass window, or what appeared to be glass, running across the middle third of its front. Standing inside to the left side looking down on us were two beings, which I could see only from the waist up but could tell that theses beings were about 4 ft tall, with abnormally large heads and large black eyes. The eyes seemed devoid of emotion and their skin was pure white, like the moon, the texture resembling that of an albino salamander. Their eyes ran almost north/south with their heads. The craft hovered silently the whole time. After about a minute of eye contact with the humanoids I got back into the care and rapidly drove away from the area. We could still see the craft hovering where we had left it.

My girlfriend and I eventually married and still live very near to the location where we witnessed this craft. Sometimes, we both get an urge to return to the spot and just sit there and talk about our shared experience, kind of hoping these beings would stop by. BB
