Since its inception, MUFON, the Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network, has presented itself as being dedicated solely to the investigation of the UFO phenomenon. On the website, it states:
MISSION STATEMENT
I. Investigate UFO sightings and collect the data in the MUFON Database for use by researchers worldwide.
II. Promote research on UFOs to discover the true nature of the phenomenon, with an eye towards scientific breakthroughs, and improving life on our planet.
III. Educate the public on the UFO phenomenon and its potential impact on society.
The MUFON website also states:

In addition to UFO sightings, certain supposedly related phenomena are of interest to some in the field of UFOlogy, including crop circles, cattle mutilations, and alien abductions and implants. Some ufologists have also promoted UFO conspiracy theories, including the Roswell UFO Incident of 1947, the Majestic 12 documents, and UFO disclosure advocation.
I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. MUFON should be the foremost organization dedicated solely to UFOlogy.
Unfortunately, that hasn't always been the case according to many ex-MUFON members and field investigators. The major argument is that MUFON simply doesn't concentrate on cases that don't offer recognition to the organization. In the meantime, many cases involving unknown entities have gone by the wayside. But this is far from the only factors in question. There has been a bit of dishonesty & speculation demonstrated as well.
On their Hangar 1 TV series, on many occasions MUFON fabricated reports to look like genuine secret government UFO documents...then presented these reports as authentic, with no explanation or disclaimer. As well, it doesn't add to the organizations credibility when we learn from a MUFON state director and one of the presenters on Hangar 1, that the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was abducted by extraterrestrials or makes a statement on a radio talk show that he believes malevolent extraterrestrials are actually demons.
There have been a few rumblings from current members as well. In the past month, MUFON announced an addition to its staff...when a Cryptoid Studies Coordinator was appointed. MUFON Executive Director Jan C. Harzan stated:
"We realized, over time," Harzan said, "that a small percentage of our cases mention odd creatures that cannot be identified. (...) has an extensive history of investigating cases with a Cryptoid connection - including the Bigfoot creature."
Uh-oh. Did Jan Harsen just say that MUFON is now going to investigate Bigfoot and other cryptids? Previously to that, it's implied that a MUFON state director believes malevolent extraterrestrials are actually demons. Is MUFON going to start to gather paranormal & cryptid accounts from the public? Why would they do that? An individual with knowledge of the Cryptoid Studies Coordinator appointment told me that this was 'just another means in helping to find the truth.' I believe that there was a another explanation all together.
If you are familiar with the ins & outs of MUFON during the past several years, then you know that the membership has plummeted. There are many reasons for this...but like I stated before, MUFON's sluggish initiative in pursuing UFO reports from the public has frustrated many field investigators. The politics and lack of communication within the organization has also been a huge concern within the rank and file.
By adding other aspects of investigating the paranormal, it seems to me, and others who have raised doubts, that MUFON seeks to increase membership and revenue by becoming the Mutual Unidentified Flying Object and Other Unexplained Phenomena Network. Every serious paranormal and cryptid enthusiast should take note. Do you want MUFON to stockpile any evidence, anecdotal or physical, that would otherwise be directed to dedicated fortean researchers and investigators? I say HELL NO!
