Daily 2 Cents: Face in the Closet -- Bizarre Beaver Attack -- Schoolgirls Suffer 'Mass Demonic Possession'

Face in the Closet

Dan Froggner e-mailed Dave about a strange experience he had while living with his grandparents:

“In 2010 I started dating my current wife. At the time, I had been living in my grandparent's house for three paranormal activity free years. Once I started dating her, I would notice a faint glow in my closet. It wouldn't happen every night and I chalked it up to my white shirt reflecting the moonlight. After awhile the glow became a fuzzy face. Too fuzzy to make out details. It would freak me out enough to shut the closet door but when I would wake up after a couple of hours, the door would be open and the face would still be leering out. I also woke up to myself sitting in the bed chatting with the thing in the closet. When I realized what I was doing, I would ask it to kindly leave me alone, turn my back to the closet door and fall asleep. My lady friend had a funny feeling about it on her first visit and a couple of weeks later, noticed the face. I ended up moving out a month after it started and haven’t had any experiences since. When I would would visit my grandparents I would check out the old room just because and nothing would happen. It was crazy. A random experience and part of me wants to know what it was and why it chose that period in my life to show itself.”

Croatia Remembers Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla, whose numerous inventions gained worldwide fame, was born exactly 160 years ago in Smiljan near Gospić, and the anniversary is being remembered in Croatia, reports tportal.hr on July 10, 2016.

The physicist from the Centre for the Advancement of Science, Humanism and Critical Thinking Slobodan Bosanac says that Tesla was "a symbol of all our giants” and the first in a series of exceptional scientists who came from Croatia. His spirit is global and we simply have to be proud of him, says Bosanac.

Tesla was raised in Smiljan and Gospić, where he finished elementary and junior high school. Remembering childhood, he once said that together with his father he practiced “strengthening of memory and reason”. He thought that, after the completion of a high school in Karlovac, he would have to follow in his father's footsteps and become an Orthodox priest. However, his father let him choose his own career. Therefore, he enrolled at the Higher Polytechnic School in Graz. Later, he also tried to go to study in Prague, and much later, in 1894, he received honorary doctorates from distinguished Universities of Columbia and Yale in the United States, as well as numerous other awards.

Tesla spent most of his life in the United States, working in different companies and laboratories, including those that he himself founded. Tesla was a man of the world. He was born and raised in Croatia, but America enabled him to become what he has become, says Bosanac.

In the USA, he patented around 700 inventions in the field of electrical engineering and radio. He designed the first AC electricity power plant, as well as the first Croatian hydroelectric power plant on the Krka river. He also worked on the idea to use the upper parts of the atmosphere for transmission of electricity from one end of the globe to another, as well as on the idea to light up the dark side of the Earth.

In 1917, Tesla received the Edison Medal, the highest award in the field of research of electricity in the United States, and the international unit of magnetic field strength was named after him.

In 2006, a memorial to Tesla was inaugurated in Smiljan. Also, many streets are called after Tesla, as well as several schools, a college, a company, a state prize for science, and a state medal. But, the most that could be done for Tesla would be to improve the educational system in Croatia: to enable young people to have access to knowledge and good teachers. School curricula should also include not only Tesla's inventions, but the Tesla himself, just like students learn about great writers, says Bosanac. - Croatia Remembers Nikola Tesla on the 160th Anniversary of His Birth

Bizarre Beaver Attack

A beaver suspected of carrying rabies attacked a paddle boarder on Beaver Lake on Friday, inflicting multiple lacerations.

"I saw a big splash, but I didn't see what the splash was from," said Betsy Bent, 67, who has used Beaver Lake for 22 years. "It came up under my board and knocked my board over, and then it latched onto my leg and wouldn't let go. I didn't know what it was at that time. I didn't think there was any 'Jaws' in Beaver Lake."

Once Bent fell in the water, the beaver kept attacking.

"I was yelling, 'Help, I'm being bitten!'" she said. " A very nice fisherman was talking to me and motioning me to come over, and then it turned around and attacked me again and latched onto my hand. Then it came around a third time and latched onto my other hand."

The angler helped beat the beaver off her, and brought Bent to shore. She was transported to Mission Hospital for care of multiple lacerations.

"Beavers chew on logs, so I've got some pretty good lacerations and staples and stitches," Bent said.

She also had to begin the rabies shot protocol, which requires multiple shots over several days.

The beaver was to be tested Monday for rabies, a serious viral disease often transmitted through animal bites. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes, according to the CDC's website.

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The shots prevent the disease from progressing.

An Asheville Police Department's Animal Control officer helped the Beaver Lake warden catch the animal after the incident, which was reported at 3:24 p.m.

"On Saturday, July 9, APD Animal Services was called by the Beaver Lake Game Warden to assist in impounding a beaver," department spokeswoman Christina Hallingse said. "The beaver was impounded and transported to the Western Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for testing at the state lab in Raleigh. Further testing is scheduled for today, July 11."

Mike Carraway, a wildlife biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, said it is unusual for beavers to attack humans.

"It’s pretty rare, but it has happened before and it has happened in North Carolina before," Carraway said. "In a situation like that, you want to treat it like it is rabies."

Bent said she Googled beaver attacks and found that the animals can be aggressive when defending their dams or young, and continued development has encroached on their territory.

Bent, who retired from Mission as director of senior services, said the series of shots is not as bad as the older routine, which involved more than a dozen shots in the abdomen. She did receive three shots the first day, has a followup shot Monday and will need shots on the seventh and 14 days after the attack.

Insurance will cover most of the cost, she said.

A frequent lake user, Bent said she's never fallen off her paddle board before this incident. She also does not want people to get a bad impression of the popular north Asheville lake.

"We've lived just up the road for 22 years," Bent said. "It's a wonderful lake. This is just a bizarre accident. We’ll be back again." - Possibly rabid beaver attacks paddle boarder on Beaver Lake
