Daily 2 Cents: Soviet X-Files...'The Petrozavodsk Jellyfish' -- Porch Panther -- Big Cat Stalked British Couple

Soviet X-Files...'The Petrozavodsk Jellyfish'

It was 4:05 a.m. on Sept. 20, 1977. Something serious was happening over the skies of Petrozavodsk .

A group of dockworkers on the early shift that morning say they saw a blinding light emerge from the direction of Lake Onega in northwest Russia. As it approached Petrozavodsk, the light took on the appearance of a glimmering jellyfish, before slowing to a hover and unleashing a salvo of ultra-thin beams of light.

The dockworkers were left wondering what they had seen. Some were concerned they were witnessing a nuclear attack: This was, after all, the height of the Cold War.

But that did not explain what came next. After 12 puzzling minutes, the shining object transformed into a bright semicircle and jetted off back toward Lake Onega. Rather than disappearing over the horizon, it appeared to veer upward, before punching a burning red hole in the clouds, and disappearing into the abyss.

No one died, and the United States, it seemed, was not involved.

The Petrozavodsk jellyfish was not the first time a UFO had been spotted over the territory of the Soviet Union, but few sightings had ever been corroborated by so many people. Policemen, sailors, an ambulance crew and even a reporter for the TASS news agency all claimed to have seen the object. The TASS reporter filed his story three days later under the headline: "A strange natural phenomena over Karelia."

Neighboring governments became alarmed, suspecting the Soviets had tested a new type of weapon. They demanded an explanation from Moscow, but Soviet leaders were apparently just as baffled. Officials even turned to the Academy of Sciences — the highest collection of scientific minds in the communist bloc — for an explanation. The Academy had no satisfactory answer, concluding that the UFO was a real physical phenomenon that required further study.

As Soviet UFO enthusiasts began promoting their own interpretations, the Kremlin convened an unprecedented meeting of military and scientific experts. They all agreed the UFO issue was too big to ignore, and resolved to launch a state investigation into the phenomenon.

Managed by the Defense Ministry and Academy of Sciences, the secret investigation began in 1978 and would run to the end of the Soviet era. Read more at Little Green Men: A Look at the Official Soviet X-Files Investigation

Florida Panther Photographed on Front Porch

LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Phil Hendra was at his father’s East Fort Myers house on March 18 when he saw this Florida panther on the porch.

Hendra snapped the photo of the endangered cat. The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute shared the photo Tuesday. The institute is part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

East Fort Myers is in Lee County, south of the Orange River.

“(The panther) stayed for about 20 minutes and laid down for a bit,” Hendra said. “It looked at us inside the window then slowly walked away, and we have not seen it since. My parents have lived here since 1988 and they may have seen a younger panther about two years ago, but nothing compares to this once in a lifetime experience.”

FWC clarified this panther was not spotted in Pinellas County, as some social media posts indicated.

Big Cat Stalked British Couple

A terrified couple from Worcester feared a huge 'black panther' would pounce on them through their car window. Robert Ingram, wife Nicola and a friend had been driving through back lanes near Croome Court in Worcestershire at around 1am on Tuesday when they saw the gigantic, muscular beast, rising as high as their car window. The father-of-three saw the big black animal coming straight for them as it looked directly into their eyes near the National Trust property at High Green, south of Worcester. Mrs Ingram, 36, said the 'Rottweiler-sized' big cat lowered its head as it came towards them as if it was 'stalking the car', looking at her with green eyes which reflected the beam of the headlights.

She said: "I was terrified. It looked like it was going to pounce. "It was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced. I was worried about it coming around the back of the car and jumping through the window." Mr Ingram also said he could make out another pair of eyes watching them from the darkness leading him to believe there may be a pair. Panicking, the driver reversed away at speed but before he could turn around the animal calmly sidled past them without so much as a second glance in their direction. Mr Ingram tried to take a photograph as his friend reversed away at speed, concerned the beast was going to attack the car.

Mr Ingram said the beast at one stage drew level with the front passenger seat where he was sitting and was was the same height as the window. He said: "It looked like a black panther. It was right beside the car before it disappeared. It was definitely a panther. I thought it was going to attack the car. It was walking dead slowly. It was very muscular and looked like it was on steroids. My mate Paul reversed at speed because he thought it was going to attack the car. I've never been that scared in my life. It was so close I couldn't have opened the door. That's how I know it was a panther."

Bob Lawrence, head of wildlife development at West Midland Safari and Leisure Park at Bewdley, said that no-one seemed to be able to produce a clear photograph to authenticate any sightings, adding 'this is the trouble'. Mr Lawrence said: "It's extremely unlikely it is a leopard or a jaguar which is from the jungles of South America. "A leopard would be more likely to survive than a jaguar." He said leopards could be black as well as their more familiar colours. He added: "There has been a circus in Bromsgrove but it's a long shot that an animal has escaped from the circus. They would never let an animal go and do nothing about it. It is extremely unlikely to be a big cat." - "Black panther" stalked us through the wild say terrified Worcester couple
