Daily 2 Cents: New Crop Formation Near Stonehenge -- Murder Suspect Haunted By Victim's Ghost -- New Massive LA Quake Indicators

New Crop Formation Near Stonehenge

A mysterious crop circle has appeared in a field just off the A303 around 1km from Stonehenge. A group who go around the country capturing the phenomenon sent up a drone to get a shot from the sky.

MrGyro, a photography and cinematography blog, trawl internet forums and receive reports from the public about the circles before tracking them down and taking photos.

Man Robs NYC Bank in Wheelchair...and Gets Away

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A search was under way Monday night for suspect in a wheelchair who held up a bank in Astoria, Queens.

Police said he held up the Santander Bank at 37th Street and Broadway in Queens shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. He passed a note to a teller demanding cash, and did not display a weapon, police sources told CBS2.

The teller complied, and police said the suspect made off with $1,212 in cash. He fled west on Broadway in the wheelchair, police said.

A short time after the incident, police asked neighboring businesses for their surveillance tapes. CBS2 obtained surveillance video of the suspect rolling down a street.

“It’s a little surprising,” one person in the area said. “I thought it was a joke at first when I overheard, but with all the police officers coming in, I realized it was serious.”

The suspect was described as a black male between 25 and 30 years old, weighing about 160 pounds and clean shaven. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie in a black wheelchair, police said.

Helium Leaks in LA Faults May Signal Massive Quake Ahead

Scientists have discovered helium gas leaking from a huge fault line on the Earth’s crust in central Los Angeles, a sign that substantially increases the chances of the “big one” – a major earthquake that could inflict unprecedented damage on the Golden State.

Stretching across Southern California, the Newport-Inglewood fault is an ancient subduction zone that was created 30 million years ago when the Pacific plate collided with the North American plate. Scientists believed the subduction zone to be relatively shallow due to its old age.

However, in a recent study, geologists found evidence of helium leaking from the fault, suggesting the zone was much deeper and has the potential to produce an earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher.

UC Santa Barbara Jim Boles examined gas samples collected from two dozen oil wells from LA’s Westside to Newport Beach in Orange County, along a 3-mile stretch of the Newport-Inglewood fault.

When the samples were analyzed, he found more than one third had evidence of high levels of helium 3, or 3He, a vestige of the Big Bang that can only be found in Earth’s mantle. The evidence of 3He therefore suggests that the subduction zone stretches deep into the Earth.

"The results are unexpected for the area, because the LA Basin is different from where most mantle helium anomalies occur," Boles said. "The Newport-Inglewood fault appears to sit on a 30 million-year-old subduction zone, so it is surprising that it maintains a significant pathway through the crust."

Boles findings were published in the Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems (G-Cubed) online journal.

"We know that the Newport-Inglewood fault is not only deep seated, but also directly or indirectly connected with the mantle," he wrote.

The findings confirm the warnings recently issued by the US Geological Survey of a "big one" hitting the city within the next 30 years, and further increase the chances of the magnitude 8 earthquake from 4.7 to 7%. Such an earthquake could produce major damage to the city’s infrastructure, destroying everything from its buildings to its transportation system.

In 1906, a magnitude 7.8 struck San Francisco and destroyed about 80% of the city, causing 3,000 deaths - Gas Seeping from Los Angeles Faultline May Signal Massive Quake to Come

Today, we take for granted the ability to send photos halfway around the world in an instant. But a century ago, getting a photograph across an ocean was a much more involved process than simply snapping a selfie and publishing it to 3,000 of your closest Facebook friends.

The April 1926 issue of Science and Invention helpfully illustrated the process, detailing everything involved in getting that photograph from London to New York City.

Murder Suspect Claims To Be Haunted By Ghost Of Victim

A Kentucky man accused of murdering an elderly Ohio woman says he's seen the ghost of his alleged victim.

The Journal-News in Ohio says newly released audio of Daniel French's confession in a Kentucky jail reveals disturbing details in the death of 86-year-old Barbara Howe. The audio is from a 40-minute-interview with French after he was captured in Rockcastle County in December 2014.

French is accused of killing Howe more than two years earlier in Ohio. Howe's body was found in the trunk of the car.

During the alleged confession the Journal-News says French tells the detective that he only meant to rob the elderly woman, not kill her.

"I just wanted to see if she had money. I was going to take it. Basically I took a stun gun. This is all I was going to do. It didn't work. It wasn't my intention to choke her to death. I was just trying to get her to black out and she wouldn't. I choked her to death," French told detectives.

In an interesting twist, French told detectives that he was haunted by Howe's ghost and that he had apologized to her apparition.

"I seen Ms. Howe's ghost and I told her I was sorry," French is recorded saying.

French was extradited to Ohio to face a murder charge. His defense attorneys are attempting to keep the jury from hearing the taped confession by saying that French was not in the right state of mind during the interview.

French also told detectives that he got $18 dollars and a diamond ring in the robbery, but he later threw the ring out of his window. If convicted, French could face the death penalty. - Murder Suspect Claims To Be Haunted By Ghost Of Victim
